Demo Guide - What Is In It & How to Play

The free Star Trek: Outposts Unknown demo on Steam covers the Daegus opening: first outpost, crew assignment and the research loop. What is in it, how to get it, what it tells you.

Quick Answer: What Does the Demo Include?

The demo covers the opening of the game on Daegus, the tropical oasis world: you land, establish the first outpost, learn crew task assignment, and run the research loop. The developer's own later walkthrough describes Daegus as "the very same tropical oasis that captains who played through Outposts Unknown's demo will be very familiar with" โ€” the demo slice is the game's actual opening, not a side sample.

How to Get the Demo

  • Open the Steam store page (store.steampowered.com/app/3469910).
  • Scroll to the "Download Demo" section โ€” it has lived on the page since the June 2026 announcement.
  • Install and play; no launch purchase or wishlist required, though wishlisting gets you the release notification for October 20.
Demo progress does not carry into the full game โ€” treat it as a systems lesson, not a head start.

What the Demo Teaches (and What It Leaves Out)

In the demo you learn every early-game system: utility placement, the welfare triad, crew assignment, and the resource pipeline of over 55 unique resources in miniature. What it does not include is the rest of the X'Lehari system โ€” the voyage map, the Kourou glacier world, ship-import logistics at scale, and the Tetryon Rift story arc. Media hands-ons from the June announcement window describe exactly this scope: the first outpost, not the campaign.

A 30-Minute Demo Exercise That Pays Off at Launch

Play the demo once freely. Then restart and run one deliberate drill: place utilities with headroom, build the welfare triad before the game forces the issue, and get the research facility supplied without ever seeing a bounced delivery. That single clean run is the exact skill the second world tests harder โ€” the players who struggle on Kourou will be the ones still retrofitting power grids on day one.

The Demo by the Numbers (Developer Snapshot)

The developer's first Captain's Devlog (June 26, 2026) shared what demo captains collectively got up to in the first weeks: 56,000 demo downloads, 26,506 material requests fulfilled โ€” and 6,337 red shirts lost to the dangers of an outpost tour. That last number is the first official confirmation that crew death is a real, tracked outcome, and the material-request count shows the ship-import loop getting heavy use. Your demo run joins a very large, very occasionally lethal cohort.

The demo was also patched after its debut (a pacing and bugfix pass landed June 12, 2026) โ€” if you played the earliest build and bounced off, the current version plays differently.
